Building Capacity as a Young Surveyor: Geosso Technologies Inspires Lagos State University (LASU) EPE Surveying Students with free training on Drone, GNSS, Total Station and Level.

This Thursday 6th November 2025, Geosso Technologies, in partnership with OTIC Surveys, organized a one day, skill equipping and inspiring outreach for Surveying and Geo-Informatics students of Lagos State University, Epe Campus. The theme of the event, “Building Capacity as a Young Surveyor: Tools, Techniques & Career Skills for Emerging Professionals”, reflected the vision behind the initiative: to bridge the widening knowledge and training gap between academic learning and practical industry experience in Nigeria’s growing geospatial sector. Bridging the Training Gap in the Geospatial Industry The geospatial profession is evolving rapidly, but many young surveyors still struggle to gain hands-on experience and exposure to emerging technologies. This is where initiatives like the LASU Epe Outreach make a difference. As established professionals, we believe it is not enough to excel individually. It is equally important to mentor and groom the next generation. This commitment to empowerment lies at the core of Geosso Technologies’ vision to build competence, confidence, and capacity among aspiring professionals who will shape the future of surveying in Nigeria and beyond. Interestingly, during the outreach, several students revealed that surveying was not their first choice when applying to university. This reflects a concerning decline in the profession’s appeal among young people. The outreach was therefore designed not just to teach technical skills but also to reignite passion and change perceptions. Students were introduced to the reality that surveying is not a bush job, but the foundation of all meaningful development in construction, infrastructure, mapping, planning, and smart city design. Hands-On Learning: From Drone Mapping to Leveling The highlight of the training was the Drone Mapping session, where students witnessed photogrammetry come to life. From flight planning and aerial mapping to data processing and map generation, participants gained firsthand experience with drone technology that is transforming modern surveying. Beyond observing, the students had the chance to fly the drone themselves, turning curiosity into confidence. They also participated in practical demonstrations with Total Stations and Levels, learning how to: Set up and execute coordinate methods using a Total Station Read a staff and perform a two-peg test Transfer heights accurately for engineering works These sessions offered a rare opportunity to apply classroom theory in the field, fostering both excitement and appreciation for the practical side of surveying. A Fulfilling Experience with Lasting Impact The outreach was warmly received by both students and lecturers. Many described it as eye opening and inspiring, expressing renewed enthusiasm for their chosen field. At the end of the session, the department extended an invitation for future collaborations, underscoring the strong impact and value of the program. For Geosso Technologies, the outreach reaffirmed a simple truth: exposure breeds excellence. Many students miss out on opportunities not because they lack potential, but because they lack awareness, access to equipment, and confidence. Initiatives like this directly address those challenges, building competence and self-belief that last a lifetime. Geosso’s Ongoing Commitment to Training and Empowerment While this outreach was focused on students, Geosso Technologies hosts professional training programs all year round for individuals, survey firms, and organizations looking to deepen their expertise. Our training modules include Drone Mapping, GNSS Survey, Total Station, Bathymetric Survey, GIS, and more, each designed to combine technical depth, real world application, and practical mastery. More outreaches will be held in the future, but you do not have to wait for the next one. You can join our regular trainings to gain the confidence and competence you need to excel in the surveying and geospatial industry. Essential Tools for the Modern Surveyor

Surveying today is vastly different from what it was a decade ago. Tape measures, compasses, and sketchbooks have given way to smart, connected tools that boost accuracy and save time. In Nigeria’s fast-moving infrastructure, oil & gas, construction, and land development sectors, having the right tools in your field bag isn’t a luxury; it’s a requirement. Here are the essential tools every modern surveyor needs to get the job done right: 1. GNSS Receivers  Modern GNSS receivers give you centimeter-level accuracy using Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) corrections. This is vital for boundary surveys, route design, site layout, and general topographic work. When paired with Nigeria’s growing CORS networks, surveyors can work faster and with higher precision in remote and urban areas alike. Top use cases:✔️ Land survey✔️ Road alignment✔️ Pipeline route tracking✔️ Topo mapping 2. Total Stations (Manual and Robotic) Total stations combine electronic distance measurement and angle measurement into one device. Robotic versions allow one person to control the instrument remotely,  increasing efficiency, especially on large or congested sites. Use cases:✔️ Building layout✔️ Bridge and road construction✔️ Monitoring deformation✔️ Engineering surveys 3. 3D Laser Scanners 3D laser scanners collect millions of data points per second to generate accurate 3D representations of physical environments. From heritage buildings to oil facilities and tunnels, they provide full-detail models that help avoid rework and speed up analysis. Where it fits in:✔️ As-built documentation✔️ Clash detection✔️ Digital twin creation✔️ Volume measurements This service is already in use in Nigeria, handled by experienced teams such as OTIC SURVEYS  using top-grade scanners. The scanners themselves are also available for purchase in our store, here @  Geossotech. 4. Drones for Aerial Surveying Survey-grade drones have changed the way field teams work. A drone can map hundreds of hectares in under an hour, with outputs like orthophotos, 3D models, and contour maps. Some models come with LiDAR or multispectral sensors, perfect for forestry, agriculture, and flood monitoring. Key applications:✔️ Site inspections✔️ Quarry mapping✔️ Crop health monitoring✔️ Urban planning Popular model: DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral – stocked at Geossotech. 5. GIS & CAD Software After collecting data, surveyors need tools to analyze and present it. Software like ArcGIS, QGIS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Pix4D allows you to clean, visualize, and deliver professional outputs. Tasks it supports:✔️ Map generation✔️ Spatial analysis✔️ Land subdivision planning✔️ Infrastructure design integration 6. Field Apps and Data Collectors Modern data collectors and mobile survey apps make workflows faster and more organized. Apps like FieldGenius, SurvCE, and Survey Master help surveyors input, process, and manage data directly in the field. Some rugged tablets and handhelds are purpose-built to withstand Nigeria’s heat, dust, and unpredictable weather. 7. Traditional Tools (Still Needed) Even with all the tech, basic tools still play a role: Prisms and prism poles for total station work Tripods for stable setups Leveling staff for elevation measurements Spirit levels, plumb bobs, and tapes for cross-checking 8. Power & Communication Essentials A successful day on site depends on reliable power and clear communication. Make sure your kit includes: Spare batteries and power banks Walkie-talkies or radios Extra SD cards Portable chargers for GNSS or scanners Modern surveying requires modern tools. These instruments reduce errors, increase productivity, and help you deliver results clients can trust. Staying equipped with the right technology isn’t just about convenience; it’s about staying relevant in an evolving industry.
